FALLEN (Going Out With A Bang)
Writtle College

For 'FALLEN', I would ike to capture the sonic landscapes created when berries, leaves etc fall from trees onto the surface below. To amplify the sound the leafs will drop onto drums. The resonating sound will then be explored visually using my own sonic installation. It will be an audio visual feast, documenting this constantly occuring natural event. The whole notion of a leaf falling has a powerful symbolic and poetic meaning, which we can all relate to. The idea of 'Death and Rebirth', plays a big part in many cultures views of the falling leaf. I like idea of viewing the leaf as an individual, a life coming to an end, lets celebrate. The Japanessse have a special holiday to celebrate the falling of the petals from the Cherry Blossom.

To achieve this projects I will situate drum like structures underneath the trees to catch the falling leafs etc. Dirrectly underneath the surface of the drum, will sit some recording equipment. Ideally I require digital recording equipment, this would allow me edit the sounds on my computer. My own sonic installation consists of a table like structure, which a layer of water sits upon. The water creates beautiful ripple creation using sound, I already have all the equipment needed for this. I also would like to film the events, this I feel will give the work an added dimension. I have some video compiling and editing equipment. I would love to be able to film a leaf falling, spiralling down, but I know this could be an impossible task.

I would like to get the students involved some how, through either interlectual input or hands on.

Day one (24/1/08)

Creating a large drum structure out of an old paddling pool frame, some metal wire and a large white dust sheet.

Size of frame 6ft-4ft.
Cloth will need to be primed to allow it to be stretch tighter.
Tent pegs were used to hold the wires to the ground.

Might need reinforcing the weak points around the wires, I suggest something like glue or perhaps metal eyelets.
